Most miles win / run 2 x 10 mile runs
It was the last Garmin Gallop before the Great Scottish Run and the challenge was to log the most miles including at least two 10 milers.
Kenny and Kev got off to a flying start thanks to participating in a couple of races. Kev was up first, running Kyles 10 Miles on Saturday 9 September. The recent terrible weather took a day off and Kev ran one of Scotland’s most scenic races in glorious sunshine, finishing in 8th. Read his report on the Maryhill Harriers site.
Kenny ran the next day in the Around Cumbrae 10 Mile Road Race and conditions were absolutely horrible for the Millport race. Kenny ran well, finishing within the top 100 out of 350 runners.
The challenge was setting up as a tale of two battles. Kenny replacing Ali in the ding dong battle with Kev for top stop, whilst Ali and Martin had an early battle for Course Sweeper.
Kenny and Ali continued to follow their training plans but Kev was rather less consistent. All three ended up missing at least one week of running due to the lurgy and gout doing the rounds. Martin started well, picking up a couple of 20+ mile weeks only to follow them up with a 2.7 mile week, giving Ali a chance to cement 3rd position as she unveiled her secret for getting through tempo runs – revisiting classic 80s TV and playing Mallet’s Mallet in her head.
The Battle of the Nocks continued on, with Kev leading at the halfway point 56.9m v 54.8m. As we entered the final week, the boys were locked on 78.6m each. Kenny stormed to victory as the challenge closed – 99m to Kev’s 96.9m
Gordon didn’t take part in the challenge but went close to his 20min 5k target. He recorded 20:01 for 2.5 miles on a very hilly run, so just needs to put the boosters on, extend the distance and run somewhere flat.
We finished the month looking at weather predictions for the big race with it looking like the arse of a hurricane hitting us and a day out with the families at the Great Scottish Run Super Saturday events.
Well done on the victory Big K.
